Practical Paint Storage

submitted by: Jennifer 04/18/11

As if I needed ANOTHER reason to love The Container Store! They have found the solution to every home owner’s plight of “What’s in that paint can?” with their clear paint pales. Each pale allows you to see and clearly label every paint you use, keeping them handy for touch ups. Just be sure to store your fancy new paint pales indoors where the temp is controlled year round. Storing paint in the garage is a big no-no; fluctuating climates in Oklahoma can quickly ruin the paint’s formula making the paint ineffective at cover ups.

Atelier’s new Nendo’s Cube (212-696-0211, to the trade) might look a bit futuristic for Oklahoma’s tastes but its functionality and sheer good looks are enough to win over the most traditional decorator.  So what’s your vote? Would you put this hard-working cube to good use in your home or is it a bit too “Andy Warhol” for you?

From TreeHugger.com: the Bookseat, a multitasking chair for those of us who can’t get enough of our favorite bookstore.

Noted as one of the “Ten Must-Sees” at the recent Toronto Interior Design Show 2008, Bookseat combines suavely-bent plywood with smart use of space to create an elegant, useful piece. It’ll be available with a felt cushion in customizable colors sometime this spring.

Ready to redecorate? Clear the clutter first!

submitted by: Jennifer 03/18/10

Some folks live in a museum-like homes where things are not to be touched, where dust trembles in fear and where every single item has its place. For the rest of the world there’s www.Simplify101. Sign up for weekly e-mails that include tips, online workshops, and more! Why do I recommend Simplify 101? True, I’m a tad OCD and love nothing more than a good afternoon of organizing. But it also makes the decorating process go bigbox_hood_1347081_splurge-johnson-a02011smoother. Before I can come into a home and start adding or subtracting design elements, there must be somewhat of a clear slate. Its difficult to have contractors moving in and about the home while they attempt to step around piles of stuff on the floor and I can more completely create a design plan for the residents if I’m not met with stacks of paper clutter on every surface. So log on and start getting organized! And then call Designing Diva Interiors to get that custom, pulled-together look you’ve always envied in magazines!

Got a snow day? Improve one room!

submitted by: Jennifer 01/26/10

blizzard_of_1977As Oklahomans prepare to take on yet another fierce winter storm this week many are facing snow days. I call these “Go days”! Its never ideal to be stranded at home but it can certainly have its benefits if you plan ahead. Days like these are perfect for tackling a small home improvement project because you are less likely to be distracted by “Oh! Gotta run to the store,” or carting the little ones around town. Personally I made a trip to my paint supplier yesterday so that I can spend Thursday repainting my laundry room cabinets. So where to start, what to do? Here is Designing Diva’s list of small improvements you can do to banish boredom on a snow day.

~ Sand down and paint/stain a small section of cabinets (think bathrooms, utility rooms, etc). Shop today for supplies.

clean-closet~ Organize one or two closets. Shop today for labels, containers, hangers, etc.

~ Replace outdated ceiling fans. Shop today for fans.

~ Add fabric trim to boring duvets, lamp shades, valances or pillows. Shop today for trim, a hot glue gun, glue sticks or fabric ahdesive spray.

~ Replace outdated drawer pulls/knobs in one or two rooms.

~ Wash machine-washable window treatments, small rugs and table coverings. You may not realize how much dust has accumulated and dulled the look of your fabric!

~ Replace sink fixtures in two rooms. Shop today for fixtures and all other necessary materials.

~ Clean out the pantry! Spices don’t last forever and your collection may be hogging valuable space.

~ Condition leather furniture. Shop local furniture or hardware stores for leather polish. Follow directions explicitley.

bed_riser_larger~ Put beds on risers for additional storage underneath. Shop today for risers and clear under-bed containers for seasonal clothing, scrapbooks, etc.

Each of these jobs could easily be completed during the length of a blistering cold day… and they can certainly feel lengthy! My wish for you is that by the time the ice melts at least one area of one room will have new life breathed into it and you can say you accomplished more than just watching the “Design On A Dime” marathon.

Happy Decorating!

Desk Rescue

submitted by: Jennifer 12/09/09

Tired of paying bills at the kitchen counter or surfing the web in bed because you don’t have a home office? Never fear! There are lots of niches in a home just begging to be used practically, and Designing Diva can help you find just the solution for you! Try adding a petite writing desk in an unused corner (preferably near a window for max natural lighting) as seen in photo. You don’t need a lot of space or four walls; just remember that if its going to be out in the open it must remain uncluttered! Use baskets or file holders mounted on the wall to keep paper clutter to a minimum. desk1
