You follow all the tips on the DDI Facebook page, you check out the blog from time to time to get trend alerts and you read my How-To’s in Edmond Active Magazine BUT you’re still not convinced. Come on… you need me… admit it… *nudge nudge*
All nudging aside, have you ever said/thought:
”I hate my house.”
“All of this stuff is so old!”
“I love running a store but don’t know how to make it all look good.”
“We have to sell this house-fast.”
“We have to get our asking price for this house.”
“I just can’t visualize.”
“I don’t know how to pull it all together.”
“I don’t know where to begin on my remodel.”
“Our builder wants us to pick out all of this stuff by Monday!”
“As a Realtor I can’t get my clients to understand the value of staging.”
If you fall into any of these catagories chances are you’re like the other homeowners, retailers or Realtors that DDI has helped. Professional decorating service is…guess what? For EVERYONE! Single, married, builder, Realtor, city, country, work hard, play hard- great design that meets you where you are both in budget and in functionality is a must. Not an option. The daylight is beginning to linger, tax return season is upon us and blooms are sprouting all over the state which means one thing: spring time is here! And inevitably spring air seems to carry with it a sense of change. We’ve been trapped in our houses for three months and during that time we’ve noticed that we really do hate that paint in the kitchen. Our countertops are like something from the Brady Bunch home and the bedding in the master, what were we thinking?! Designing Diva Interiors gets it. Unfortunately, so do a lot of other homeowners which means as of today there is a four week wait list for large projects. Call 405.816.9716 or email Jennifer@decorateokc.net today to get your Initial Consultation on the books before summer!

My plight could be compared to that of a mechanic who’s car is always making a clanking sound or the nutritionist who’s a bit keen on the brownies. I’m a professional decorator and I can’t find the perfect color for my own living room. I choose paint colors for other homes every week, pairing wild metallics with subtle monochromatic color schemes to create the perfect ambiance for rooms all over the country. But its time I ‘fess up: my husband and I have lived in our current home for three years and those walls are still white. It isn’t that I’m afraid of color- at age 13 I painted one wall of my bedroom electric blue with a silver metallic glaze and in our first home the dining room walls were fuschia. I think its a combination of two things. One, the space is large- vaulted ceiling, long walls- and that’s a lot of work to paint once, twice, three times, so I want to make sure I have it right the first time. The second obstacle is that unlike many of my clients I married a highly opinionated man when it comes to the way our home looks. Sometimes I will be walking the isle of my favorite home decor shops and hear a man say “Honey, I don’t care, whatever you like”, and I get a teensy jealous. Of course I want my spouse to love our space and feel like he had a hand in it too. I just wish he didn’t know the difference between Persimmon and Salmon.
I was aiming for something bold and warm at the same time- a color that enveloped you as you walked in. I had grand visions of brushing a Pearl Metallic glaze over it so that it put off the most subtle glimmer when the sunlight hit it. Sounds romantic, right….?
So we began our first attempt to actually put our ideas into action this week and I now have a collage of “red dirt” shades all over the living room. My first two picks were too pink so I’m heading back to Sherwin Williams this evening to give it another go, this time adding more brown to my sample of “Persimmon”. Maybe by this time tomorrow my walls won’t look like a Picasso piece gone bad. Stay tuned!
Attempt #1: Benjamin Moore’s “Persimmon”.

If we can just hang on for a few more weeks, warmer weather is on the horizon. We’re all tired of being cooped up inside, passing our germs from one family member to the next, staring at the same walls day after day and getting stuffy noses from our heaters. May I prescribe a little something for that D.W.S. (Dreary Weather Syndrome)? The outdoor living room is completely customizable and ready to cure what ails you. Here are three items to help get the ball rolling. Let your personality take over from there and guide you in the finer details!
1) Seating. Comfort is key, otherwise your laid-back BBQ will quickly turn into a game of musical chairs as guests try to find somewhere to sit that isn’t
hot to the touch or painful on the lower back like so many outdoor pieces can be. I love pieces that are versatile so naturally, I’m in love with the Play Lounge Chair by Philippe Starck for Dedon. Suspend it for a touch of ultra-chic or let it stand alone on the grass; either way, super comfy seating for everyone in the family. Plus its like art for your yard and you can’t beat that pairing!
2) Tables. Create the perfect al fresco dining experience with the perfect
outdoor table. The Tuscany 29″ Dining Height Fire Pit Table by California Outdoor Concepts is again versatile. Fill the center with ice to keep the evening’s wine selection perfectly chilled or use gas logs to build the ideal fire pit. Built from sturdy copper and granite this adds as much beauty to your patio as the gorgeous sunset you’ll be enjoying while you dine.
3) Heat. Furnishings aren’t the only thing here that’s versatile. Oklahoma weather is nothing if not ever-changing. To cope, my I recommend heat
that’s not only effective but attractive! Plow & Hearth offers the outdoor patio heater for just $249. To stave off those chilly evenings when you’re determined to enjoy that sunset no matter what, get one or two of these beauties to keep the guests toasty!
Now let your creative side do the rest! Fill in the blanks with your own style. Don’t forget the outdoor rugs, artwork, lighting and accessories to create the perfect outdoor living room! You’ll never want to come inside!

*This post by Jennifer Hicks, owner of Designing Diva Interiors LLC, was originally posted on this blog in Dec. 2009.
Unless you live under a rock (a well decorated one since you read this blog religiously!) you are no doubt being inundated with calls to make New Year’s Resolutions. Personally I’ve never been a fan. Why make positive changes in your life just one time a year? But the call to action does have its benefits for homeowners who will be using January to kick off long awaited projects. For my household that means installing new trim and crown moulding. For you the job may be much smaller or much more grand; either way, there has never been a better time to start creating a new look for your home. Why? Motivation is at an all-time high in January for everything from weight loss to quitting smoking. Why not use this universal momentum to get the master bedroom repainted? Additionally, prices on the items you will need for your home’s new look will be delicously discounted as retailers try to make up for decreased profits during the holiday season. This is also the time of year when many home furnishings stores clearance out their inventory to make room for shipments that will soon arrive from market.
You may be asking yourself “Where to begin?” and the answer is undoubtedly, “nowhere unless you’ve done your due diligence”. Side effects of your new burst of energy may include a desire to jump in with both feet… without looking for rocks first. Below is my simple guide to tackleing a new project in the new year without falling short of your own expectations.
1) Budget. Whether the project be large or small, some money will be involved. Know what you want your end result to be that way you can research the cost of what is involved. This is similar to “never go grocery shopping while hungry”. If you don’t know what you really want you are more likely to overspend and end up with unecessary extras. Even if you are just organizing all the closets in the house it is helpful to know how many containers you will need for each space. You may find that you need 24 clear boxes with lids and each box costs $3.00 for a total cost of $72.00. When you know the cost of your project ahead of time you get only what you need and you can (hopefully) avoid using credit cards/financing to get it done because you have had time to budget it in.
2. Measure. Now measure again. There aren’t too many projects around the house that do not require at least a rough measurement. Painting a room? You will need to know how many gallons to buy so you don’t get half way down the hall and need to rush to the store, paint brush in hand. Organizing closets? Measure the depth, width and height of each space to make sure you get the right size containers the first time. Buying a new duvet for the master bed? You may be tempted to pick up any package that reads “King” but your measurements may show you that you really need a California King so that your bedding reaches all the way to the floor. Get it?
3. Do your homework. As with #1, doing some research on your larger jobs now will save you a lot of time, money and headache later. If you want to add a kitchen island have a kitchen designer draw up some sketches for you first to make sure everything will fit and match your family’s needs. You may find that you have room for a larger island than you first thought or that it involves more than you are able to do yourself and the help of a pro is required. For reputable kitchen designers I recommend RenovateKate (www.renovatekate.com) or Amanda Harolds AKBD, both of Oklahoma City.
4. Get thrifty. You may think you need new lamps (and maybe you do) but it could be that a new shade is enough to freshen up the entire room. New lamps could cost hundreds but buying new shades or recovering your existing ones with a stylish fabric is only a fraction of the cost. Paint the base (make sure to use wood paint for a wooden base and metal paint for a metal base!) and you can create a very different look on a small budget and not much time. Think outside the box with various rooms to see what small changes you can make to create a whole new look.
5. Be willing to admit defeat. This may sound like the worst advice ever but when it comes to your home (especially when it comes to your home) knowing when you’re in over your head is the difference between getting the job done right and spending a month in a hotel while contractors work to finish the mess you started. Do-It-Yourself has become such a household name (I blame HGTV) that many people simply never met a project they didn’t like. It is true that you can save yourself a lot of money this way but there may be a few things on your list that are better left to the experts. Electrical and plumbing projects top the list. One mistake here and your new New Year’s resolution is to simply move rather than deal with the disaster you’ve created. Other home improvement projects that make a huge difference but may need a pro: installing new flooring, expanding a room, adding an appliance and any carpentry work. Designing Diva Interiors, LLC has a list of local home improvement experts for each of these topics and would be glad to refer you to one that meets your needs.

Some of you may have hired a professional designer or decorator in the past. Some of you are considering it for the first time and many of you have upcoming initial consultations with one. In an effort to minimize any confusion and to make the most out of your time with your home’s new best friend, I would like to take a moment to list a few common things you should know before diving into your next project.
1) Is he/she currently certified, liscensed, insured and/or registered with the state? Many people find that they have a knack for decorating and begin offering their services to others. While you may save money going this route, be aware that this is definitely one of those cases where you get what you pay for. He/she may not have the experience and education required to provide you with the results you want in a timely and desirably manner. Additionally, hiring someone who is not insured is a huge risk to you. If that person is injured while in your home they could sue and win.
2) Talk about fees. At or before your initial consultation your designer should discuss her fees. If she doesn’t, bring this topic up before she leaves that first appointment. You don’t want any surprises later. Make sure you are clear on the following: Is the rate hourly or by the job? When it payment due? Which forms of payment are accepted? Is there a late fee for past due payments?
3) What are your goals for this project? Over the years I have gotten much better at reading clients’ body language to help me understand what they want when they cannot verbalize it. However, this should not be the standard method of communication between designer and client. Before meeting with your designer for the first time make a list, no matter how long or short, of your goals concerning this project. This can include a desired budget, timeline and overall look. I encourage clients to tear pages out of magazines that show colors, styles or items they are inspired by. This will help to make the very most out of your time together.
4) Are you and your spouse on the same page? Again, this is something that should be determined before the designer arrives on the scene but if your wants differ from those of your spouse, a good designer can help bring the two of you together. But know this: we are not marriage counselors. We are here to create a look that compliments your style, needs and budget. If she wants a coastal vibe for the family home and he demands Old World traditional decor, there is only so much I can do. It is awkward to watch a couple bicker in front of me so please discuss your wishes with one another before bringing me in. This is will save everyone time and money and believe it or not, a designer WILL “fire” the client if the job is going nowhere because of this issue.
5) Does my designer have a niche or specific style? Many designers across the globe establish themselves in one niche over the course of their career. This may mean that, while they can do all styles, they are particularly skilled at bringing French Country to life or really prefer doing childrens’ rooms. So why is this important for you to inquire about? If you hire a designer who’s portfolio shines with photos of rustic cabins and outdoor living spaces, you may not be getting someone who ”gets” your style which could be more modern.
6) How many clients does he/she work with at one time? No one ever asks me this and I am surprised by it. I have recently made it common practice to tell each person who inquires about my services that I only work with five clients at any given time. This ensures that each project gets my utmost attention and that I won’t be too busy to assist them with a last-minute or emergency need. With a designer-or any contractor- who overbooks himself the client comes up short changed. Make sure your designer will have the time to deal with any and all needs you require- whether you know about them yet or not.

From creating a spa-like retreat to adding a punch of drama, the color blue is universally popular thanks to its versatility. Below are some of my favorite shades and how I would use them:
1) Valspar’s “Regal” 4004-8C. Use in a high gloss on a front door for an instant “wow” factor. Looks good with terra cotta oranges and against neutrals.
2) Ace Hardware’s “Blueville” A41-7. A fabulous jeweltone that has more green than purple in it. Use on bedroom wallsto create a colorful but sensuous cacoon. Looks good against bright whites and soft greys.

3) Dutchboy’s “Tournament Blue” E26-1. Described by Better Homes and Gardens as an “all-American hue”, this classic shade of blue looks good in smaller doses. I would paint the fronts of porch steps or shutters this color. Looks good with whites, reds and purples (also used in small doses).
4) Sherwin Williams’ “Gulf Stream”. This is the shade of blue you find in Carribbean waters and is fun yet sophistocated in nearly every application. Use in a kitchen or bathroom for unexpected and cheerful color every day.

Many homeowners put a great deal of time, energy and cash into the look of their home’s interior while the exterior goes without year after year. I can make this accusation because I am guilty of it myself. Well not this spring! Below are a few links to help you get started. Remember, outdoor living rooms are making their way to Oklahoma residences in a big way and you don’t need a 4000 square foot home to have one. Follow some or all of these tips to get started and then call Designing Diva Interiors, LLC at 405.816.9716 to get a designer’s touch on your perfect outdoor living space!
