HOLIDAY DECORATING WITH A PRO: 101

submitted by: Jennifer 10/20/10

By now you have had time to recount the last few winters and you get tired just thinking back to the trips to the store for ornaments, a second trip to the store when Fluffy broke your ornaments, decorating the tree at midnight (because when else were you supposed to do it?), getting the house sparkling clean, preparing the meals, entertaining the guests— WHEW!

WANT TO ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON AGAIN?

So you’ve wisely decided to hire Designing Diva Interiors, LLC to take care of the decorating for you this year but you’re not sure what to do next.

Schedule your consultation! But please be forewarned that you may not get scheduled in the same week you call. As this is the busiest time of the year for DDI we do our very best to meet the client’s needs as quickly as possible but may be booked several days out so plan ahead! A consultation is $85 and includes 1-2 hours with the Jennifer Hicks, owner and an experienced Certified Interior Decorator (C.I.D.). During this time the following points will be discussed (see below) and a plan of action/design will be laid out. Holiday decorating jobs are priced by the size of the job. The following are topics that you will need to think about prior to your consultation.

a) Time frame. If you intend to have the home decorated in time for a party, open house, home tour, etc, please give your designer ample time to complete the project so that every last detail can be perfect!

b. Budget. If new accessories/garland/ornaments, etc are required how much would you like to spend on these items? This may or may not be a realistic budget given your design preferences but your designer will be able to estimate costs for you before the decorating begins.

c. Style. Do you like your mantle overflowing with things that sparkle in the night or do you prefer a more natural, simplistic look? A custom holiday design is indeed very custom– no two centerpieces from DDI will ever be the same, no two Christmas trees donning the same ornament collection, no duplicated floral arrangements, guaranteed.

d. Inventory. Before your consultation it is important to go through your current decorations and determine what’s broken and needs to be replaced and what you would like to use again this year. Once your expert knows what you have to work with an appropriate budget and shopping list can be determined.

If you’re staying home this holiday weekend you should make the most of it and spruce up your abode with DDI’s simple DIY tips. Missed Parts I and II? You can check them out on my Facebook fan page or right here in blog posts from the past week!

1) Change out the knobs and handles in one room. Even if you can’t paint or stain your cabinets right now the new hardware will give the space a facelift.

2) Spray paint a tired chandelier. Look for spray paints designed for brass, wrought iron or whatever yours is made of.

3) Use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to give baseboards, walls, doors, etc a nice cleaning. If your home has flat paint on the walls and doors grimey hand prints are likely making your home look older than it really is.

4) Replace those old blinds already! If you have damaged or outdated blinds it won’t really matter how lovely your accessories are- the whole room will be cheated by the lack of attention to the windows. I recommend Blind Alley in Oklahoma City (405.848.0099) and tell David the Designing Diva sent you!

5) Pull grandma’s heirlooms and hand-me-down’s out of the closet to create your own fantastic collection. Her china plates would look smashing hung on the wall (visit Hobby Lobby for plate hooks, found in framing section) or string her now vintage hankerchiefs up on a clothesline above the guest bed for a chic and truly unique look. Get creative but for heaven’s sake get those precious items out of storage! No one gets to enjoy them if they’re in boxes somewhere and your home decor should be a reflection of you and your family’s heritage.

Save money: Re-use last year’s candles!

submitted by: Jennifer 12/07/09

Every year we spend money buying new candles, especially during the holiday season. The problem is most clients I visit have a closet full of partially used, dusty and forgotten candles which means their money is literally going up in smoke every time they bring home a new one.

756candles1Stephanie of Mustang, OK  (aka Diva’s Mom) discovered a handy tip that will give her old candles new life this Christmas and she wanted to share it with us!

Spray a small amount of Pam Cooking Spray (or a similar non-stick product) on the dusty candle and wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Make last year’s pillars look like this year’s favorite accessory by adding the following for a completely refreshed look:

1) Add sprigs of garland at the base of the pillar and surround with cranberries (I used a cake stand as the candleholder).

2) If the color of the candle is still faded after using Pam spray to dust clean, coat the candle with a glue stick and  roll in a glitter that matches your color scheme.

3) Unwanted broaches and pins make lovely additions to larger candles. Simply push the broach into the side of the pillar candle so that it stays put and you’ve got instant bling!
