Green is My New Black

submitted by: Jennifer Hicks
8/11/10

I have a new crush. Its green. No, it isn’t money (although I appreciate that, too)…. its actually green- the color. Its all over 7d94ea1e2ce_ikea1the design scene right now and my attraction to it has taken me by surprise. I’m usually drawn to pinks, blacks, greys and milky whites but I’m seeing glossy green on everything from tables to floors and I’m completely infatuated! We’re not talking about mint or olive. This is like a color from “Alice In Wonderland”- bright yet not obnoxious, playful yet classic.

Using the laquered version of this color in my home probably isn’t going to happen- not on the scale I would like. My husband isn’t one for bold colors or patterns, he’s more of a rustic, earth-tones fan. BUT! There is hope for me yet… he has zero preference 6916c7c5-b0b4-4a40-bc39-9982d6400f8b_493x693about the back patio and I’m claiming that space as my own come fall. I think I’ll have OKC’s Custom Powder Coating makeover my outdoor furniture with a high-gloss green; the color of poison ivy. My mind swirls with the possibilities I’ll never get to incorporate into our abode (but maybe I can use yours to play in?):

*Painted on the floor of a loft apartment

* Laquered on the cabinets of a small kitchen

* Glossed onto a bathroom vanity

* Used on an end table

* Used on Baroque frames in a foyer

This could get fun…

Advice from a painter

submitted by: Jennifer Hicks
5/3/10

I asked three local painters to share with my readers a few points they wished our customers knew. Here’s what Edmond-based designer and painter Patti Wommer had to say:

“I have found that clients who wanted to faux paint a piece of furniture with a glaze over the paint have a lot of issues with the result.  I use wood stain over paint and the result is always amazing.  You can have a heavy or light glazing by taking more or less stain off the piece.  Using a rag kept in a baggy after the last job is the best application tool of all.   Van Dyke Brown stain is the color for all jobs if you don’t know what color to choose.  It looks amazing over turqoise blue,  any green, brown, golds, whites, try it over any color.”

Show House nears deadline

submitted by: Jennifer Hicks
3/23/10

For designers, the end is near at the 2010 Symphony Orchestra Show House, located at 2550 E. Overholser Drive. This is our last week to fluff the pillows, touch up the paint and put every last detail in perfect order before the home is photographed and opened to the public. Today was a productive day for Designing Diva’s room, the Guest Powder Bath, located in the front of the 17,000 sf mansion. The draperies have been hung, the last touches put on the hand-painted designs on the metallic ceilings and accessories were brought in this afternoon that will “wow!” guests upon entry.  You won’t want to miss the end result! Get your tickets at Bruno’s Home Furnishings or Cedarburg Square!

Got bedroom decorating questions?

submitted by: Jennifer Hicks
3/8/10

bigbox_hood_1347081_splurge-johnson-a0201One of my favorite rooms of the home to decorate is the bedroom. You can go for optimum luxury to playfully casual and everything in between and I love it all! Because you can’t keep using your college twin bed forever, send your bedroom decorating questions here or to Jennifer@decorateokc.net and they could be answered on this blog this week!

Examples:

~ “Does my master bathroom hardware have to match what’s in the bedroom?”

~ “Does the furniture have to be the same finish?”         bedroom1

~”We don’t know what kind of flooring we want in the bedroom.”

~ “How do we make the bedroom part masculine and part feminine for us both?”

I can’t wait to see what kinds of queries you come up with!

The Pottery Barn Epidemic

submitted by: Jennifer Hicks
2/2/10

vases

I love Pottery Barn, I do. I love the layered look of each season’s collection, the way the colors of their products envelope you as you enter the room, the appearance of a calm atmosphere. But there is an epidemic that has seen its share of face time and I’m calling its victims out. We shall call it P.B.E., or the Pottery Barn Epidemic. Its definition: in short, it is the widespread necessity to pick up a catalog, order everything off of the page and call it “home”.  It should be made clear that I am not singling out Pottery Barn exclusively. Again, huge fan. But your home’s environment should reflect you, not a group of designers in California. The layered look is good, but it should feel as though the look was created over time, through years of collecting, rather than in one swift shopping spree on a Saturday afternoon. Buy the lamp from page 31 but shop antique stores or vintage flea markets for that reading chair. Go ahead and splurge on the Italian vase collection-I’ve used them in many homes myself- but don’t get the matching plates/servers/bowls/candlesticks. I’m begging you- when I ask you “How would you describe your style?” please, please, don’t reply, “Pottery Barn”. This isn’t a style, people, its a store that has successfully marketed its products as “take ‘n go”; which for some is a necessity. But for you, my savvy, well-rounded readers, its just plain boring. Step outside the box and save yourself from PBE! I’m not telling you not to shop there, I would be a hypocrite for certain- I am simply asking that you slowly walk away from the catalogs. Think about the things that truly make your home unique; the Suzani you brought back from your favorite vacation, your husband’s photo collection of old buildings, a trunk that has been passed down for five generations. These are the things that make your home yours. And you won’t find that on page 31.
