Grocery Store Bouquets

submitted by: Jennifer 10/27/10

Most of us love the fragrance that a fresh bouquet gives a room. We can all appreciate how they add color and romance to any space from the small powder bath to the family dinner table on Thanksgiving. But keeping fresh stems in the house on a regular basis can drain the checkbook- fast. Kelly Kegans and Jessica Thomas shared their ideas for inexpensive arrangements with Better Homes and Gardens Magazine in the September 2010 issue. Read on, get inspired and spruce up your space today for about $10!

ss_100626228When you don’t have time to be more creative, pump up the impact of a mixed bouquet purchased at the grocery store.

–Cut the stems really short and arrange them in a low, medium-wide vase.
–Group flowers of the same color into clusters, rather than evenly distributing all the different varieties, to create little focal points where the eye can rest.

A supermarket bouquet you bought for the colors, not the arrangement, can be salvaged at home.

–Take it apart, separating the medium- and large-size flowers from the smaller fillers and greenery.
–Bunch the larger flowers in your hand until you have a grouping you like.
–Gauge the proper height of the flowers by standing them next to the container and trim appropriately.
–Begin tucking in the small and thin flowers and greenery to fill in any gaps left by the larger flower heads.
–Place in a fun container, such as the bright bucket shown here.

ss_100626219Grab a few bouquets of zinnias in multiple colors for a playful, low arrangement.

–Gather the blooms of one color in your hand to form a pleasing mound; add a single contrasting color bloom to the center.
–Secure with a rubber band and place in a vase.
–Feed in blooms of another color to form an outer ring and fill the vase.
–Place a bit of greenery, such as bleeding heart foliage, around the outer edge for added contrast.

Another tip from BHG: Add a touch of autumn to your arrangement by tucking fresh apples into a bouquet of red dahlias. Poke twigs into the bottoms of different size apples, then insert twigs into floral foam inside the container.

We’re On To You….

submitted by: Jennifer 10/26/10

When Editor-in-Chief Paige Noland of Architectural Digest wrote the following, I felt like she had just had lunch with me and the thousands of other designers who have been stiffed at some point in their careers. She put into words what we wish we could say to would-be trouble making clients.

Amen, Ms. Noland. Amen.

“STOP, THIEF! You know who you are. You do not intend to pay what you legitimately owe to the architect or interior designer. I wrote about this in my September 2008 letter and honestly can’t believe it continues to be an issue. But designers and architects wrote in by the boatload thanking me for speaking up. We know that you have attorneys on retainer who will launch threats or actual lawsuits by claiming a paint color was wrong, shelves were not adequate, this was not delivered, that was not as specified and the other thing was too late and didn’t match anyway. You are counting on the belief that the architect or interior designer cannot afford to fight back.

Now, to be fair, there may be a few interior designers and architects who are at fault as well. But we believe there are only a FEW. There might have been double-billing, shoddy merchandise delivered that was not what had been ordered, etc. It is possible that one or two of the AD 100 might be included in this group, although not to our knowledge. The design community is small, and bad apples get bitten. Word spreads. We hear. We try to show only those professionals with impeccable reputations, but admittedly we cannot give lie detector tests before granting membership. That will have to be addressed at another time. For now, however, I will say it again: You know who you are. And, undoubtedly, so do the architects and designers you would like to commission.” paige-rense-architectural-digestjpg-8bf79fb9f2d00dd4_large

HOLIDAY DECORATING WITH A PRO: 101

submitted by: Jennifer 10/20/10

By now you have had time to recount the last few winters and you get tired just thinking back to the trips to the store for ornaments, a second trip to the store when Fluffy broke your ornaments, decorating the tree at midnight (because when else were you supposed to do it?), getting the house sparkling clean, preparing the meals, entertaining the guests— WHEW!

WANT TO ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON AGAIN?

So you’ve wisely decided to hire Designing Diva Interiors, LLC to take care of the decorating for you this year but you’re not sure what to do next.

Schedule your consultation! But please be forewarned that you may not get scheduled in the same week you call. As this is the busiest time of the year for DDI we do our very best to meet the client’s needs as quickly as possible but may be booked several days out so plan ahead! A consultation is $85 and includes 1-2 hours with the Jennifer Hicks, owner and an experienced Certified Interior Decorator (C.I.D.). During this time the following points will be discussed (see below) and a plan of action/design will be laid out. Holiday decorating jobs are priced by the size of the job. The following are topics that you will need to think about prior to your consultation.

a) Time frame. If you intend to have the home decorated in time for a party, open house, home tour, etc, please give your designer ample time to complete the project so that every last detail can be perfect!

b. Budget. If new accessories/garland/ornaments, etc are required how much would you like to spend on these items? This may or may not be a realistic budget given your design preferences but your designer will be able to estimate costs for you before the decorating begins.

c. Style. Do you like your mantle overflowing with things that sparkle in the night or do you prefer a more natural, simplistic look? A custom holiday design is indeed very custom– no two centerpieces from DDI will ever be the same, no two Christmas trees donning the same ornament collection, no duplicated floral arrangements, guaranteed.

d. Inventory. Before your consultation it is important to go through your current decorations and determine what’s broken and needs to be replaced and what you would like to use again this year. Once your expert knows what you have to work with an appropriate budget and shopping list can be determined.

Warm up your favorite spaces for winter!

submitted by: Jennifer 10/15/10

The turning of the leaves, the holiday music, the family dinners; it can only mean one thing- winter isn’t all that distant. We’re about to start spending a lot more time indoors and if your space leaves a little (or quite a bit) to be desired, use the photos below to get inspired! Fellow bloggers across the country have their own idea of an ideal hibernation hole. What’s yours?

What’s on your playlist? By Aby Garvey

submitted by: Jennifer 10/14/10

I know that the following article doesn’t have much of anything to do with design but I know my readers and I know that many of you– much like myself- forget to add a little playtime into your busy schedules. Blogger Aby Garvey has something to say about that, so read on!

Now just to be clear, I’m not talking about the play list on your MP3 player, smart phone or iPod. Nope—the kind of play list I’m referring to has nothing to do with music. Instead, it has everything to do with good old fashioned fun.

So what’s a play list? Well, it’s the distant cousin of the to-do list. A play list, you see, is a list of things you do just for fun.

Now if you’re thinking, I don’t have a play list because I don’t have time for fun…well…this is precisely the right time to create a play list. We all need time to play, time to do things that nourish our souls, quiet our minds, and energize our bodies. Whether your play list involves actual play like sports or playing with your children, or your play time activities are things like knitting, reading, or another creative pursuit, it makes sense to play. When you carve out time for fun in your schedule, you approach your work with more enthusiasm and energy. In essence, this means when you have more fun, you get more done. (Hey, that sounds like a tag line I know…!)

Take Action!

First, create your play list of things to do just for fun—to play, to relax, or to restore your energy. Then, pick one item from your list and add it to today’s to-do list. Give this activity the same level of priority as you would a dentist appointment or paying the bills. (I’m serious.) Finally, take note of how you feel, and of how you approach every other item on your to-do list when you know that today you get to play!”

Unique Wall Decor that Wows

submitted by: Jennifer 10/12/10

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve purchased reproduction artwork from a major chain store just to save a client some cash. But I also believe in putting more than just filler on your walls. The walls of a home say a great deal about the residents inside it, or at least, they should. If it doesn’t speak to you on some level, if it doesn’t catch your eye and stay on your mind for days after you’ve seen it, it doesn’t belong.

So your walls are baren and you’re stumped; what to do? Below are a few of my current favorites from original abstracts to metal reproductions. A little something for everyone!
