It’s human nature to walk into your home and drop everything in your arms onto the nearest flat surface. Unfortunately, for many of us, that flat surface happens to be the kitchen counter. 
(Argh!) The easiest way to solve this problem isn’t to try to change your habit of dropping what’s in your arms when you walk through the door, but rather, to create a drop zone, or an intentional landing spot for these everyday items.
Take a look at what’s in your arms each day, and then, carve out a home for each of these items. The ideal landing spot will be just as easy to get to as the current landing spot. In your entry way, install a shelf or repurpose a side table to serve as a temporary landing spot for those days when your arms are really full. Then, near this new flat surface, install hooks for purses, bags, backpacks, umbrellas and coats. Outfit your shelf or table with baskets, trays, bowls or buckets to corral mail, keys, cell phones, pocket change, hats, gloves, and other small items you carry into and out of your home each day.
Remember, one of the reasons you currently use the kitchen counter (or your favorite drop spot) is because it’s easy. Make your new drop zone easy to use, too, and you’ll find it’s simple to get into the habit of using it.
